A little about our service area…

A district in central London, Southwark is just south of the River Thames and forms one of the oldest parts of the city. Previously, the area was marshy and from recent excavation, it can be deduced that Southwark was formerly a series of islands on the River Thames. As such, the location was the best place to construct London Bridge, as a crossing point from the capital, further south.

At the end of the 16th Century, the Globe Theatre was opened, with Shakespeare a shareholder. It has had a patchy history, being burnt to the ground in 1613, rebuilt the following year, before being turned to rubble three decades later by the Puritans. The current Shakespeare’s Globe was built a stone’s throw from the original site, on the River Thames.

Along with many areas along the South Bank, the borough has seen a huge amount of investment and regeneration since the millennium. The end of the old manufacturing industries, meant the closure of factories and the opening of major office developments, drinking spots and cultural hubs. The icing on the cake was the construction of The Shard, the highest open-air viewing gallery in Europe, and London’s most recent iconic skyscraper.
