A little about our service area…

Merton, also known as the London Borough of Merton, derived its name from the ancient parish of Merton Priory. In the 7th century, this village was called “Farmstead by the small lake (mere)”. According to the Domesday Book, William the Conqueror formerly held Merton. It was turned into an urban district (Merton Urban District) in 1907 and it became a borough in 1965. Amongst the 32 London Borough, Merton is one of the places named after a medieval town or village.

Located at the southwest of London, Merton boasts of five town centres: Raynes Park, Morden, Raynes Park, Mitcham, Colliers Wood and Wimbledon. Raynes Park is the centre of the Capital’s commuter belt and part of the National Rail Network. Morden and Mitcham both have large open spaces and parks. Colliers Wood and Wimbledon on the other hand, are highly-urbanised areas with larger supermarkets and home to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. A tramlink, train and Tube service also serve Merton. It is the only London Borough to have all these rail services.

John Innes, William Morris, Ray Austin, James Pierrepont Greaves, Pope Adrian IV (Nicholas Breakspear) and Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson are some of the notable residents of Merton.
